Manning Depot

After enlisting, Royal Canadian Air Force trainees were sent to a Manning Depot where they learned to shave, shine boots, polish buttons, maintain their uniforms, and otherwise conduct themselves in a manner expected of RCAF personnel. Trainees underwent two hours of physical education every day, which included marching, rifle drill, foot drill, and saluting. Trainees who had not yet finished high school took classes to bring them up to the academic level required to join the RCAF. After several weeks of basic training a selection committee decided in which division of the Air Force a trainee would be placed. Following basic training at a Manning Depot, trainees were sent to training schools specific to the division in which they were placed. Radar personnel would be sent to Clinton, Ontario to complete their training in radar, radio, and electronics.
