RAF: Royal Air Force
The Royal Air Force is Britain’s aerial warfare force. The RAF was formed in 1918 at the end of World War One and was the largest air force in the world at that time. During the Second World War, the RAF had fewer aircraft than Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe, but still defended allied air space from the Luftwaffe and made strategic offensive strikes in German territory. Men from across the British Commonwealth, including 1800 Canadians, served in the RAF during the Second World War.
