RCAF: Royal Canadian Air Force

The Royal Canadian Air Force was originally established in 1918 as the Canadian Air Force. It consisted of two squadrons, a bomber and a fighter, that were created for but never participated in the First World War, which ended before the squadrons were ready for battle. Starting in 1920, the Canadian Air Force operated as an aviation training organization until 1922, when the CAF became responsible for all flying operations in Canada, including civil aviation. In 1924, the prefix “Royal” was added, and the RCAF became a military organization by the late 1920s. The RCAF was an important part of Canada’s contribution to the war effort as the fourth largest allied air force by the end of World War Two.
