Women's Land Army

The Women’s Land Army was civilian organization that employed women to work on farms throughout World War Two. German U-boats targeting cargo ships coming into Britain caused a food shortage, and men were called away to serve on the front lines, leaving women to take their places on the farms. Women’s duties in the Land Army included all the regular activities involved in operating a farm, such as threshing, ploughing, tractor driving, reclaiming land, drainage, harvesting crops, and milking cows. Often women who served in the Land Army were from urban centers and had some training, but often learned on the job.
